History

Luna's Jacal was the home of Gilberto Luna, a Mexican pioneer farmer and goatherd who lived along Alamo Creek in the area that became Big Bend National Park. The low dwelling, built around 1890-1900, has stone walls about four feet high with upright forked poles supporting a pole-and-brush roof and backs against a large boulder. Luna reportedly lived there and raised a large family until his death at an advanced age in 1947, and the jacal was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
