History

The Barton Warnock Visitor Center was built in 1982 by the Lajitas Foundation as the Lajitas Museum and Desert Gardens and was purchased by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1990. It was named for Barton H. Warnock (1911-1998), a botanist and leading authority on the flora of the Trans-Pecos and northern Chihuahuan Desert. Serving as the eastern gateway to Big Bend Ranch State Park, it presents archeological, historical and natural-history exhibits and a two-acre desert garden.
