History
On the Sul Ross State University campus in Alpine, the Museum of the Big Bend traces to the 1925 founding of a regional historical society that became the West Texas Historical and Scientific Society. Its native-rock building, designed by professor Victor J. Smith with Texas Centennial and WPA funds, was dedicated in 1937 and reopened under its current name in 1969. A 2003 capital campaign funded a renovation completed in 2007, and an $11 million, 10,000-square-foot expansion opened in June 2023.
