History

The Falls on the Colorado Museum occupies Marble Falls' original 1891 school, built of pink granite from the nearby Granite Mountain quarry. The town, laid out by General Adam Rankin Johnson, gained a narrow-gauge railroad in exchange for donating granite to build the Texas Capitol, and its namesake falls disappeared when the LCRA built Max Starke Dam in 1951. Exhibits recall local pioneer Ophelia 'Birdie' Crosby Harwood, elected the nation's first female mayor in 1917.
