History

The New (or West) Cottonwood Cemetery is one of two burial grounds serving the Cottonwood community of southern Callahan County, which was first settled about 1875-76 amid the cottonwood trees that gave it its name. In 1884 Sarah Jane and P. W. Hall, heirs to a Republic of Texas land grant, formally donated land for the community's cemetery and its churches, though burials had begun as early as 1877.
