History

Belle Plain Cemetery is the enduring remnant of Belle Plaine, which served as the first seat of Callahan County and was home to Belle Plain College, founded in 1881. Residents were burying their dead here by 1878, the oldest marked grave being that of sixteen-year-old Virgil Hill. The Texas & Pacific Railway bought the tract in 1879 and deeded it to the county in 1884; the Texas Historical Commission placed a marker at the cemetery in 1992.
