History

The Historic Brownsville Museum occupies the 1928 Southern Pacific Railroad passenger depot, a Spanish Colonial Revival landmark that served travelers until 1952 before the city rehabilitated it as a museum in 1984. Exhibits trace the founding and history of Brownsville, and the collection includes an 1872 Baldwin narrow-gauge locomotive from the Rio Grande Railroad that once ran between Brownsville and Point Isabel. The depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized as a Texas Historic Landmark.
