History

The Old City Cemetery Center in Brownsville occupies the former baggage room of the old Southern Pacific depot and houses a permanent exhibit on the adjacent Brownsville City Cemetery, established in 1853. The cemetery holds victims of war, gunfights, and yellow fever and cholera epidemics, reflecting the hard early life of the border town, and the center hosts exhibitions and preservation programs. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
