History

The Iwo Jima Museum and Monument stands on the Marine Military Academy campus in Harlingen, home to sculptor Felix de Weldon's original 78-foot working model for the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, based on Joe Rosenthal's 1945 flag-raising photograph. Dedicated at the academy in 1982, the monument honors Cpl. Harlon Block of nearby Weslaco, one of the flag raisers, who is buried behind it. The Texas Historical Commission is funding a new museum, with the site closed for renovation until about 2028.
