History

The Yturria Bank, built about 1854 in Brownsville for merchant Francisco Yturria, was the first privately owned bank south of San Antonio. The two-story Border Brick building also housed one of the city's first telegraph offices, and in 1881 Yturria ran an international telephone line linking it to his family's mercantile store across the river in Matamoros. Mexican-born Yturria (1830-1912) exchanged Mexican currency for U.S. coin here, storing silver and gold in a vault now displayed at the Historic Brownsville Museum.
