History

Hickory Hill Cemetery is on the east edge of Avinger, just off State Highway 49 in southern Cass County. The name traces to the Hickory Hill post office, established at the old Pattillo place on the Jefferson-to-Clarksville road a few years before the Civil War. The cemetery includes a separate section for enslaved people that is said to contain the graves of unknown Union soldiers.
