History

Sardis Cemetery lies about five miles east of Hughes Springs beside the old Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church, serving the vanished lumbering-and-farming town of Sardis. Early settler Robert Mayfield donated the land; the oldest grave dates to 1862 and the earliest marked stone to 1871, and a cemetery committee was organized to maintain the grounds in 1924.
