History

Knoxville Cemetery is the last remnant of the town of Knoxville, settled by immigrants from Tennessee in the late 1840s and named for the city in their home state. By the Civil War the village had four general stores, mills, a distillery, and a shared church, but it was bypassed by the International-Great Northern Railroad in the early 1870s; the post office closed in 1875 and most residents moved to nearby Troup, leaving Knoxville a ghost town. The cemetery stands south of Troup in far northeastern Cherokee County.
