History
Old Larissa Cemetery lies just southwest of the vanished town of Larissa, a northwestern Cherokee County community first settled by the Killough family in 1837, reestablished after Texas statehood, and granted a post office in 1847. Also known as the Larissa Community or Larissa CME Cemetery, the burial ground mirrors the settlement's makeup: its oldest fenced section holds early white settlers, while adjoining areas hold the graves of African American residents. Larissa flourished from roughly 1850 to 1900 before fading into a ghost town, leaving the cemetery and a few churches as its principal remnants.
