History
Killough Cemetery marks the burial site of victims of the Killough Massacre, remembered as the deadliest Indian attack in Texas history. On October 5, 1838, raiders struck the frontier settlement of Isaac Killough Sr. and his extended family, who had emigrated from Talladega County, Alabama, to the Republic of Texas the previous year; eighteen members of the group were killed or carried off. A stone obelisk memorializing the victims was raised at the site by the Works Progress Administration in the late 1930s, and a state historical marker was dedicated in 1965.
