History

The Rusk State Hospital Cemetery lies about two miles north of Rusk on FM 768 and serves the state psychiatric hospital established there in 1919, when the former Rusk Penitentiary was converted into an institution for the mentally ill. It contains well over a thousand burials of patients who died at the hospital, many in simply marked graves. In its early years the hospital, which admitted patients of all races, operated tubercular wards and an infirmary alongside its general wards.
