History

Cedar Hill Cemetery lies southwest of Silver in western Coke County and takes its name from a nearby cedar-covered rise. The surrounding community was settled by stock-farming homesteaders about 1890, and a one-room school stood just north of the cemetery beginning in 1891; most of its marked burials fall between roughly 1890 and 1908. Drought and isolation drove many families away after 1904, though the area later sat atop one of West Texas's large oil fields.
