History

Hayrick Cemetery is the last remnant of Hayrick, a town at the base of Hayrick Mountain that served as Coke County's first county seat when the county was organized in 1889. The 11.7-acre burial ground was deeded to the Hayrick Lodge Cemetery Association in 1892 by officers of the Austin & Northern Land and Cattle Company for one dollar. After an 1891 election moved the county seat to nearby Robert Lee, Hayrick's residents relocated and only the cemetery—with many unmarked turn-of-the-century graves—remained; a state marker stands at its entrance.
