History

Old Valera Cemetery, near Valera in western Coleman County, records its first burial as that of Mrs. N.C. (Rivers) Kidwell in 1922. Among those interred is Dr. H.H. Mitchell, who came to Valera in 1905 as the town's only physician, helped found its first school, and served as a Baptist deacon and bank president. Veterans of conflicts from the Spanish-American War through the Korean War also rest here.
