The original Second Emppire design was heavily altered in 1927 when the mansard roof, bracketed cornice and towere were removed and the double arched windows changed to single rectangular opening. Constructed of buff brick and limestone, the current design includes columned entries on the original Victorian tower bays.

The Old Collin County Courthouse in McKinney, the county's third on this site, was erected in 1874-1875 and opened in 1876 to a French Second Empire design by architect Charles Wheelock of Sherman; reputedly the tallest building in Texas north of San Antonio when finished. It was extensively rebuilt in 1926-1927 under architect W. A. Peters of Paris, Texas, which added a basement and a third floor. The restored building now serves as a performing-arts venue on the town square.
