History

Dr. William Edward Throckmorton was born in Virginia in 1795 and earned a medical degree in 1817 before moving through Tennessee and settling near Melissa in Collin County in 1841. He died in 1843 and was buried in the Throckmorton Cemetery northwest of Melissa, where the Texas Centennial commission placed a granite monument at his grave in 1936. Throckmorton County was named in his honor, likely as a compliment to his son, Governor James W. Throckmorton.
