History
In 1886 James Maxwell Jr. sold three acres for five dollars to trustees who formally established Maxwell Cemetery near present-day Murphy, though no Maxwell family members are buried there. Its earliest marked grave is that of Samuel McCreary (d. 1853), and more than a third of the interments are children, reflecting the era's high childhood mortality; veterans of the Black Hawk War, Civil War, and World War I also rest here. The cemetery served the community for over a century, with the last burial in 1966, and was marked by the Texas Historical Commission in 2001.
