Collin County voters created the Collin County Community College District on April 6, 1985, approving a $70 million bond for two campuses and electing a nine-member board. Classes began that fall with 1,326 students meeting in high schools around the county, and the first permanent campus opened in McKinney in January 1986 on 155 acres near U.S. 75 and U.S. 380. The large Spring Creek Campus in Plano followed in 1988, and Preston Ridge Campus in Frisco opened in 1995 as the county's suburbs boomed. The district adopted the shorter name Collin College in 2007, began offering bachelor's degrees in 2019, and between 2020 and 2021 opened a Technical Campus in Allen along with campuses in Wylie, Farmersville and Celina, giving it about ten locations today.
