The school now called Galen College of Nursing opened in 1989 in Louisville, Kentucky, as Galen Health Institutes, a Humana venture that initially trained licensed practical nurses in a one-year program at sites in Louisville, San Antonio and St. Petersburg, Florida. It took the Galen College of Nursing name in 2005, when it won accreditation to offer an associate degree that qualifies graduates to become registered nurses, and HCA Healthcare acquired a majority stake in 2020 as the college added online bachelor's and master's programs. In September 2022 Galen announced a North Texas campus in the 190 Office Center on the Bush Turnpike in Richardson, backed by HCA's Medical City Healthcare, with plans for a three-year BSN along with associate and vocational nursing programs; it opened in 2023. In June 2025 the college's accreditor, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, placed it on Warning status over standards on student achievement and access to archived course catalogs.
