History

The Sophienburg Museum and Archives, founded in 1933, stands on the hill where Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels established the Adelsverein headquarters in 1845 and laid the cornerstone for the "Sophienburg," named for his fiancee Princess Sophie. Its collections document New Braunfels' German-Texan heritage across a rotating series of exhibits, and its archives are among the largest repositories chronicling German immigration to Texas.
