History

Pendergrass Cemetery grew out of the homestead of pioneer farmer-rancher William Pendergrass (1818–1898) and his wife Emaline, who settled in this part of Comanche County in the 1870s. The first burial came in 1883, when Pendergrass gave a plot for a stranger found dead nearby; he deeded a one-acre cemetery to the community in 1888, and Emaline added a second acre after his death in 1898. A community leader who helped found local churches and a school, Pendergrass is buried here with many of his descendants, and a cemetery association fenced the grounds in 1959.
