History
Cottle County was created in 1876 and named for George Washington Cottle, who died at the Alamo in 1836. For years it remained open ranch country, home to spreads such as the Matador and SMS, until residents petitioned for formal organization, achieved in 1892 with Paducah as county seat. A state marker was erected in 1964.
