History
The Pioneer Memorial Building of the Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Museum honors Hank Smith (born Heinrich Schmitt in Germany) and his Scottish-born wife Elizabeth, whose stone 'Rock House' in Blanco Canyon, built in 1877, was the first permanent dwelling on the South Plains. The Smiths ran a store, post office and stopping place in the canyon north of Crosbyton. Begun in the late 1950s through the Lamar Foundation, the museum's central facade recreates the Hank Smith house as a tribute to the region's first settlers.
