History

This cemetery is the last remaining trace of Boracho, a railroad ghost town in southern Culberson County that grew up along the Texas and Pacific Railway line built through the area in the early 1880s. The settlement's unusual name is generally traced to the Spanish 'borracho' (drunk), from a tale that a rival railroad crew plied the T&P workers with whiskey to gain ground during construction. A post office operated at Boracho from 1908 to 1912, but the town faded through the twentieth century, and by about 1970 the cemetery was all that remained of it.
