History

This burial ground lies at Van Horn Wells, a group of springs at the foot of the Van Horn Mountains south of the town of Van Horn that were long known to Apache travelers and Hispanic residents before Anglo settlement. The wells served as a watering stop on the San Antonio–El Paso Mail and along the Butterfield Overland route in the late 1850s and early 1860s, and a U.S. Army garrison commanded by Lt. James Judson Van Horn was posted there from 1859 until Confederate forces seized the site in 1861. The graves here recall that frontier way station in far West Texas.
