History

The Alfred Horatio Belo House at 2115 Ross Avenue in Dallas was built around 1900 for Colonel Alfred Horatio Belo, a Confederate veteran and founder of The Dallas Morning News. Designed by architect Herbert M. Greene in the Neoclassical style, its two-story brick facade carries a monumental pedimented portico of six Corinthian columns, and it was among the first Dallas homes with electricity and indoor plumbing. Later used as a funeral home, it drew crowds in 1934 when Clyde Barrow's body was displayed there. The mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 29, 1975, and after the Dallas Bar Association acquired it in 1977 it became known as the Belo Mansion, renamed the Arts District Mansion in 2021.
