History

The Sanger Brothers Complex occupies a full downtown Dallas block on Lamar Street between Elm and Main and was the flagship of the Sanger Brothers department store chain. Built in phases between 1884 and 1910, it blends High Victorian Italianate, Richardsonian Romanesque and Commercial-Sullivanesque styles; the eight-story 1910 building by the local firm Lang & Witchell is considered the city's finest Sullivanesque commercial design. Later purchased by the Dallas County Community College District, it became the main building of El Centro College and is listed on the National Register.
