History

This Dallas marker commemorates John Neely Bryan (1810-1877), the Tennessee-born trader and lawyer who founded Dallas by establishing a permanent settlement on the Trinity River in 1841. His log cabin served as home, post office, store, and courthouse, and in 1844 he helped survey and plat the townsite he named Dallas. Bryan was instrumental in organizing Dallas County and donated land for its first courthouse.
