History

The Caruth House recalls brothers William B. and Walter Caruth, merchants who began acquiring land in the Dallas area in 1852 and ultimately assembled tens of thousands of acres that became much of north Dallas. William and his wife Mattie built the house in 1872 in a Victorian style, and in 1938 their descendants remodeled it into a stately Neoclassical home with two-story Ionic columns. The property stayed in the Caruth family until 2000 and received a Texas historical marker in 1962.
