Burials here date to 1852, when the ground served the McKamy and Scott families as Scott Cemetery. In the 1870s George Coit, a formerly enslaved farmer and a founder of White Rock Chapel C.M.E. Church, bought adjoining land so that families of the surrounding White Rock freedmen's communities could bury their dead, creating the White Rock Union Colored Graveyard. Believed to be among the first integrated burial grounds in Texas, the combined site was renamed White Rock Cemetery, Garden of Memories in 1972 and holds many of Dallas's earliest African American pioneer families.
