Bakke Graduate University opened in Seattle in 1990 under the name Northwest Graduate School of the Ministry, and for its first decade it mainly trained pastors in the Pacific Northwest, gaining accreditation up to the doctoral level in 1995. After a leadership crisis at its founding church in 1998, the school was reshaped around the urban-ministry work of Ray Bakke, whose global city network grew out of the Lausanne movement, and around 2000 it began folding his urban Doctor of Ministry program into its offerings. The board of International Urban Associates assumed leadership in 2003, and the Bakke siblings, whose careers spanned business, urban ministry, pastoring and Bible teaching, agreed to lend the family name; by 2004 the school was Bakke Graduate University of the Ministry. It later added business education, with a founding business dean named in 2006, and dropped "of the Ministry" to become simply Bakke Graduate University. BGU moved its headquarters from Seattle to the Gaston Christian Community Center in Dallas in 2014 and today teaches mostly online, with short city-immersion courses around the world.
