W. A. Criswell, the longtime pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas, proposed a church-based Bible school in 1969, and the congregation approved Criswell Bible Institute in 1970; evening classes opened on January 12, 1971, with 329 students, backed in large part by Dallas philanthropist Ruth Ray Hunt. Day classes, a bachelor's program and a graduate school followed through the 1970s, and after earning regional accreditation in 1985 the school took the name Criswell College. In January 1991 it moved out of First Baptist's downtown buildings to its own remodeled campus on Gaston Avenue, where a bronze statue of its founder stands in the rotunda. The college affiliated with the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention in 2001 and formally separated from First Baptist Church in 2010, and it has since broadened its curriculum beyond ministry training.
