Dallas Christian College grew out of a May 10, 1949, meeting at which former missionary Vernon Newland gathered about forty Texas church leaders to plan a Bible college for the Restoration (Stone-Campbell) Movement churches. Classes opened on September 12, 1950, at two locations in downtown Dallas before the college moved to its present 22-acre campus in Farmers Branch, northwest of the city. Affiliated with the independent Christian Churches and accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education, it added an accelerated adult program in 1995, alternative teacher certification in 2003 and a Bachelor of Science in Education in 2015. The small college, whose athletic teams are the Crusaders, says more than five thousand students have attended since its founding.
