Parker University

Parker University is named for Dr. James W. Parker, who settled in Fort Worth after finishing chiropractic school in 1946, opened clinics in cities across Texas and, from 1951, sponsored the postgraduate seminars now known as Parker Seminars. Colleagues who wanted his practice methods taught to students persuaded him in the late 1970s to back a new school bearing his name, and Texas chartered Parker College of Chiropractic on March 8, 1978. Its first campus, in Irving, opened on September 12, 1982, Dr. Parker's 62nd birthday, and 27 students made up the first graduating class in 1985. The college relocated to a larger Dallas campus in 1989, and by 1993 enrollment had reached about 1,000, which the school says made it the third-largest chiropractic college in the world; the Irving site remains a chiropractic clinic. Renamed Parker University in April 2011, it has added programs beyond the Doctor of Chiropractic, including master's degrees in neuroscience, strength and human performance and functional nutrition. After a tornado heavily damaged the Dallas campus in October 2019, the university rebuilt and added a 64,000-square-foot South Building in time for classes in fall 2021.
