The University of North Texas at Dallas sits on a 264-acre hilltop in southern Dallas, and its campus has been built almost entirely in the 21st century. The school grew out of a UNT satellite program, won independent status by act of the Legislature, and has added a building every few years since its first hall opened in the mid-2000s. This walk starts at the light-rail stop that ties the campus to downtown and climbs through the original academic halls to the 180-foot Ryan Tower at the center of it all. UNT Dallas traces back to 1997, when state senator Royce West and state representative Helen Giddings pushed for a study of a public university for southern Dallas County, a mostly African American area then served by just one private school, Paul Quinn College. The University of North Texas opened a System Center at Dallas in temporary business-park space in 2000 (Wikipedia dates the first classes to the spring semester, with 204 part-time students; the university's own timeline says fall), making it the first public university operating inside the Dallas city limits. In 2001 the Dallas City Council pledged up to $3 million toward land along the I-20 corridor, donors enlarged the site to 264 acres, and the Legislature set an enrollment threshold for independence that it eased in 2003. The first academic building on what was then Houston School Road was finished in 2006 and in use by January 2007, enrollment hit the required level that spring, and in April 2009 the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board granted the school independent status. In fall 2010 it welcomed its first freshmen and opened a second academic building. Its College of Law, authorized in 2009 with retired federal judge Royal Furgeson as founding dean, enrolled its first class in 2014, moved into the renovated former Dallas City Hall downtown in 2019 and won full ABA accreditation in 2022. On the main campus, a DART rail station (2016), the first residence hall (2017), a $63 million student center (2019), Ryan Tower (2022) and a STEM building (2025) followed. Today UNT Dallas enrolls roughly 4,000 students and runs dedicated support programs for first-generation college students.
