UNT Dallas Campus Tour

The University of North Texas at Dallas sits on a 264-acre hilltop in southern Dallas, and its campus has been built almost entirely in the 21st century. The school grew out of a UNT satellite program, won independent status by act of the Legislature, and has added a building every few years since its first hall opened in the mid-2000s. This walk starts at the light-rail stop that ties the campus to downtown and climbs through the original academic halls to the 180-foot Ryan Tower at the center of it all. It is a short, modern loop of about a mile, a snapshot of a campus still being built.

Most Texas campuses measure their history in centuries; the University of North Texas at Dallas measures it in years. Set on a 264-acre hilltop in southern Dallas, it grew out of a UNT System center founded in 2000, became an independent university in 2010, and has added a new building every few years since. This walk is a rare chance to see a university campus while it is still taking shape.

The story starts with the light rail. DART's Blue Line reached the university in 2016, and the road beside the station, once Houston School Road, was renamed University Hills Boulevard to mark the school's arrival. Up the hill, DAL 1 was for a time essentially the whole permanent campus after it opened in 2006, and every later building was laid out around it.

The newer landmarks show how quickly the school has grown. The Amanda & G. Brint Ryan Tower, dedicated in 2022, rises 180 feet from a lighted plaza with a water feature and was designed to be seen across southern Dallas; its precast brick design later earned an industry award. Nearby, the Student Center, a roughly $63 million building opened in 2019, gave a largely commuter student body a place to linger, and the terraced Hart Amphitheater, opened in 2021, hosts open-air classes and performances.

It's a short, modern loop of about a mile and an easy trip by train, offering a snapshot of a young university and the part of Dallas it was built to serve.
