UT Southwestern began in 1943 in a cluster of abandoned wartime barracks, after Baylor moved its medical school from Dallas to Houston and local leaders scrambled to replace it. In 1955 the school moved to Harry Hines Boulevard beside the new Parkland hospital, and in the decades since it has grown into a sprawling academic medical center whose faculty have won several Nobel Prizes. This walk moves along South Campus from the original 1955 building to a plaza that has become one of Dallas's most striking outdoor sculpture gardens, then to the modern university hospital and Parkland, the teaching hospital forever tied to November 22, 1963. It is about a mile and a half, mostly along busy medical-district sidewalks.

A group of Dallas civic leaders led by physician Edward H. Cary and businessman Karl Hoblitzelle formed the Southwestern Medical Foundation in 1939 to build up medical education in the city. When Baylor moved its medical school from Dallas to Houston in 1943, the foundation opened Southwestern Medical College to fill the gap, starting out in a cluster of surplus wartime barracks. After the war, as Texas planned a new state medical school, the foundation proposed handing over the college's library, equipment and some of its funds on condition that the school be based in Dallas; the University of Texas regents agreed, and in 1949 the college joined the university as Southwestern Medical School. The school moved in 1955 to its present site on Harry Hines Boulevard, where the new Edward H. Cary Building stood next to the recently built Parkland Memorial Hospital. Reorganized as the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas in 1972, it gained a Howard Hughes Medical Institute research unit on campus in 1986 and adopted the UT Southwestern Medical Center name in 1987. Today it combines a medical school, graduate biomedical sciences, health professions and public health schools with its own university hospitals, and its faculty have won multiple Nobel Prizes.
