Sue Wade started the school in 1962 as Miss Wade's Fashion Merchandising College, first holding classes in Dallas's Turtle Creek area before moving in 1965 into the Dallas Apparel Mart at the Dallas Market Center. It earned regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1985, took the name Wade College in 1999, and in 2004 relocated to the Infomart in the Dallas Design District. The college added interior design to its merchandising and fashion programs, winning full CIDA accreditation in 2019, and counts environmental activist Erin Brockovich, who earned an associate degree there in 1980, among its alumni. Today it offers associate and bachelor's degrees in merchandising and design from a compact campus at The Gild on North Central Expressway near NorthPark Center.
