West Coast University traces its charter to a small Los Angeles school chartered by California in 1909, which later offered engineering, business and evening degree programs for working adults before going bankrupt in the 1990s. In 1997 David Pyle, founder of American Career College, bought the name out of bankruptcy and rebuilt West Coast University around registered-nurse training and other health programs. The university opened its first Texas campus in Dallas in 2012. In August 2021 it moved students into a new campus of about 136,000 square feet in Richardson, its largest location, with simulation rooms, a simulation pharmacy and clinical skills labs, and it held a grand opening there in 2022.
