History

Lamesa Memorial Park, which incorporates the older Dawson County Cemetery, sits on the southwest side of Lamesa and is the city's principal burial ground. Its earliest recorded interment is that of infant Leonard Ebenezer Moffatt in 1891, and the oldest photographed headstone marks the 1900 grave of two-year-old Lena Belle Dalmont. Long operated as two adjoining grounds—one privately owned, one owned by the county—the cemeteries were consolidated under county management in 2017 after the private operators were convicted of financial wrongdoing.
