History

Merchant and rancher E. B. Black (1866-1945), who came to Hereford in 1901 and opened a furniture store, hired contractor Emmett Vanderburgh to build this two-story late-Victorian house with a wraparound porch in 1909. Long a gathering place for community events, the home was given to the Deaf Smith County Historical Society in 1976. It was named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and now serves as part of the county museum.
