History

The Texas First Ladies Historic Costume Collection at Texas Woman's University in Denton preserves the gowns — original garments or faithful replicas — worn by the wives of Texas governors and presidents of the Republic of Texas, from the mid-1800s onward. First created in 1940, it is the only collection of its kind and has been expanded with dresses worn by former U.S. first ladies Mamie Eisenhower and Lady Bird Johnson. Some 17 of its more than 40 gowns are displayed at a time, rotating throughout the year.
