History

The Dimmit County Visitor's Center and Jailhouse Museum is in Carrizo Springs, the county seat and oldest town in Dimmit County, settled in 1865 by cattleman Levi English and about fifteen families from Atascosa County. Dimmit County was created in 1858 and organized in 1880, named, with a spelling error in the bill, for Texas Revolution figure Philip Dimmitt.
