History

The Sauceda Cemetery is a family burial ground in Rios, a ranching community on Agua Poquita Creek in southeastern Duval County about thirteen miles southeast of Benavides. Rios was settled by families whose roots in the area date to the late nineteenth century and gained a post office in 1938, named for postmaster Felipe V. Rios after earlier proposed names had already been taken. By the late 1960s Rios consisted of scattered dwellings and the Vera Cruz church, and small family cemeteries like this one are scattered across the surrounding ranchland.
