History

Concepcion Cemetery serves one of the oldest communities in Duval County, located on Farm Road 716 and Macho Creek in the southeastern part of the county, about fourteen miles southeast of Benavides. The town of Concepcion was named for Santa Cruz de Concepcion, a Spanish land grant made to Francisco Cordente, and its post office opened in 1873 with Rafael F. Salinas as postmaster. By 1884 the community had roughly 600 residents and three general stores. The cemetery reflects the town's long standing as a center of the surrounding ranching country.
